Hoe gaat dit nu in zijn werk &#8211; het wordt nu wat technischer -? De API maakt gebruik van informatie verkregen via links en files op een website (inclusief FOAF en XFN metadata) waarmee deze relaties zichtbaar worden. Nu is het al zo dat deze informatie publiekelijk beschikbaar is. Echter niet iedereen zal direct de broncode van een website induiken om te kijken of deze verbanden er zijn.<!--more-->De XFN metadata kan relaties leggen tussen kennissen, familie of zakenrelaties, om maar enkele voorbeelden te noemen. Zo is het bij de blogsoftware van WordPress al mogelijk om XFN relaties aan te maken. Dit is daar specifiek een onderdeel van de blogroll functie. XFN staat voor:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><abbr title=\"XHTML Friends Network\">&#8220;XFN\u2122<\/abbr> (<strong>X<\/strong>HTML <strong>F<\/strong>riends <strong>N<\/strong>etwork) is a simple way to represent human relationships using hyperlinks.  In recent years, <dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/help\/blogging101.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"Hyperlink to a definition of the term 'blog' and related terms.\" target=\"_blank\">blogs<\/a><\/dfn> and <dfn><a href=\"http:\/\/www.microcontentnews.com\/resources\/glossary\/blogrolling.htm\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"Hyperlink to a definition of the term 'blogrolling'\" target=\"_blank\">blogrolls<\/a><\/dfn> have become the fastest growing area of the Web. XFN enables web authors to indicate their relationship(s) to the people in their blogrolls simply by adding a &#8216;<code>rel<\/code>&#8216; attribute to their <code title=\"hyperlink anchor\">&lt;a href&gt;<\/code> tags &#8221; [<a href=\"http:\/\/gmpg.org\/xfn\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">bron<\/a>]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/roodlicht.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/screenshot380.jpg\" alt=\"Google komt met Social Graph API\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Onder het geminimaliseerde kopje Link Relationship (XFN) zie je allerlei opties die je kunt aanzetten en invullen. Daarmee wordt automatisch de rel attribute gevuld. Maar dat terzijde. Google gaat nu deze informatie gebruiken om de relaties tussen website eigenaren in kaart te brengen. De vraag is natuurlijk, waarom zou Google dit willen? Het zou kunnen zijn dat zij hiermee misbruik willen aantonen van linkfarms, maar de rel attribuut is iets dat niet standaard wordt ingevuld, dus als je iets aan het doen bent dat niet door de beugel kan, dan laat je het gewoon weg. De andere reden zou kunnen zijn dat Google met XFN verwacht nog betere zoekresultaten aan te kunnen bieden. Iets als gerelateerd aan deze site. Een functie die we al zien bij <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexa.com\" target=\"_blank\">Alexa<\/a>. Ook daar is het nog deels door de gebruiker bepaald.<\/p>\n<p>We weten in ieder geval dat de relaties tussen sites ook door Google achterhaald kunnen worden door haar &#8216;macht&#8217; als domeinregistrar voor het toplevel domain .com. Daarmee heeft Google de beschikking over alle WHOIS informatie van .com domeinnamen. Door beide informatie bronnen aan elkaar te knopen, kan daarmee nog adequater worden opgetreden tegen search engine spam.
