De precieze ijkdatum waarop Google nu Google werd is niet geheel bekend. Maar toch. In de afgelopen 10 jaar is Google van een kale zoekmachine geworden tot een multinational van gigaformaat. Het is een van de meest bekende merken wereldwijd en beheerst 70% van alle zoekacties wereldwijd.\u00a0<!--more-->\u00a0Een kleine 10 jaar geleden overheerste AltaVista nog, nu is deze zoekmachine gereduceerd tot proeftuin van Yahoo! waar nog slechts enkele nieuwe dingen worden uitgeprobeerd. Andere toendertijd grote zoekmachines als Lycos, Excite en AllTheWeb, zijn ook niets meer dan interfaces voor andermans data.<\/p>\n<p>Wat wel wordt gezegd is dat het grootste verschil is geweest dat Google de Pagerank technologie ontwikkelde. In de academische wereld, van waaruit Google ontstond, is het meer dan belangrijk om geciteerd te worden. Dat bepaalt je aanzien. Deze gedachte is door Google doorgetrokken in het fenomeen Pagerank. En dat heeft de afgelopen 10 jaar uitstekend gewerkt.<\/p>\n<p>De grootste angst voor Google is momenteel dat er een andere zoekmachine opstaat met een evenzo brilliant idee. Van Yahoo! en Microsoft hoeven we dit niet te verwachten. Maar ongetwijfeld is er ergens in de wereld wel weer een geniale student bezig met een zoekmachine te ontwikkelen gebaseerd op een totaal nieuw concept.
